To open the workshop, Daniel Gerhartz will lead a discussion using slides of masterworks to demonstrate principles of edge control, color temperature, accurate value relationships, and design decisions.

Following this in-depth discussion, Daniel will demonstrate how these principles come into play as he paints a portrait from life, carefully showing and explaining what key elements to look for in developing a painting.

The key to these concepts will be in training the participants to effectively see the accurate relationships to assist them in their own works.
To best achieve this, students will draw along with Daniel as he copies a masterwork and carefully explains the proper technique to see accurate edge and value relationships. Materials will be provided.

On day two, Daniel will create a figurative painting from life using warm backlighting. While discussing the differences in color temperature from the previous demonstration, he will also carefully describe the necessity of strict value control to best achieve a convincing effect of light.

While the fundamentals of painting will be an integral part of what he teaches, there will be a stronger emphasis on design and working through the problem-solving that needs to be addressed in a larger composition.Throughout the sessions, students will be sure to catch Daniel’s excitement and enthusiasm as he brings his methods to life, making his principles accessible to artists of all skill levels.

(Cost is $297 in addition to the conference registration. This workshop is for registered attendees only)
